How to Prepare Your Car for Storage
When planning for vehicle storage, you’ll need to do more than just park your car and then forget about it. The right preparation can help preserve your auto and prevent damage, especially in scenarios that require you to store your vehicles for long-term storage. Here are a few tips about how to prepare your car for storage.
Wash and Wax
Even though it may seem odd, washing and waxing your car before storing it helps prevent paint damages from the elements. Dirt, debris, dust, pollen, animal droppings, and other natural elements can cause spots on your paint. Additionally, washing the undercarriage keeps mud or tar from becoming an issue.
Lube and Oil Change
Fresh oil is unlikely to become corroded and wear down your engine. As such, you should always change your oil just before placing your vehicle in storage. Don’t choose just a standard oil change, but instead ensure your service includes lubricating the suspension and topping off all fluids. That way, you can prevent your seals from breaking down or condensation building up inside delicate components.
While your car is up on the lift, have your mechanic check for any leaks. Leaking fluids could be detrimental to your vehicle’s health when you arrive to pick it back up.
Top Off the Gas Tank
Topping off the tank is important if you’re opting for long-term storage (30+ days). Filling up your tank before storing your vehicle prevents moisture from building up inside the gas tank. Additionally, consider a fuel stabilizer to prevent buildup and protect the engine from gum, varnish, and rust. Topping off the gas tank has multiple benefits when storing your vehicle long term.
Disengage the Parking Brake
It may seem natural to engage the parking brake during long-term storage. However, by doing so you are actually encouraging corrosion in your brakes. So always check to see that your parking brake is disengaged before shutting the storage door behind you.
Plug Up Your Tailpipe
Use a piece of aluminum foil to plug up your tailpipe. This will discourage rodents from getting inside and building a nest while you are gone. Don’t forget to remove the foil before starting your car again.
Cover Your Car
Place a permeable car cover over the top of your vehicle once you have completed all the above steps. This will provide maximum protection while also helping to deter rodents.
